Ruben Gelardi was born into a family of artists and art dealers, and debuted at the age of 10 at the artists free exhibition in 1948. The following year in 1949, he had his first solo show. He was accepted at the Royal Art Academy at the age of 16 and was a private pupil of Professor Kreasten Iversen and Niels Lergaard from 1954.
